News Briefs

PERRY BEACH CELEBRATED ITS OPEN HOUSE last weekend, August 29th, highlighting the general improvements, the new pavilion, new rest rooms, landscaping, walking path, and large boulders which help contain runoff and are good for near-water seating. The renovated beach is not yet officially open, delayed by the complications of Covid-19 rules which affected the size of the labor force. Mayor Rick Hauser is just happy to have this local drawing card as part of his village.
Real estate moves quickly in Perry which is seen as a part of the Main Street improvements and new businesses, along with the newly renovated Beach, the Park, the S/L Outlet Trail, and the working relationship of the local governments in conjunction with the Silver Lake Trail Council, Silver Lake Trail Feasibility Study (by the Village of Perry, and Towns of Perry and Castile), the Main Street Association, the Rotary Club (original donor of the Beach), the Hole in the Wall, and Silver Lake non-profit promoters (the Silver Lake Association, the Pioneer Cabin Museum, and the Silver Lake Institute).

120 TRACTORS WERE PART OF THE 11TH ANNUAL TRACTOR DRIVE AROUND SILVER LAKE — The parade took place Sunday, August 30, 2020 with founder Ted Van Valkenburg and family and co-organizer Terry Page, sponsored this year by Charcoal Corral. Ted and his son Hans Van Valkenburg led the drive this year. 120 tractors was a record number as was the number of patrons. Tractors took several different routes back to the Corral including Walker through the Silver Lake Institute to Chapman, S. Federal to 39, and S. Center St. (246) to 39. This increased the visibility of the celebration of such well known brands as Allis Chalmers, Case, Farmall, Ford, International, John Deere, Massey Harris, Minneapolis Moline, and Oliver.

SILVER LAKE OUTLET DAM GATES UNDER REPAIR — A week ago Friday, Village Department of Public Works staff traveled to Baltimore, Maryland and picked up two custom-fabricated gates and delivered them back to the Village of Perry late the same day. Work began Tuesday, Sept. 1st and will hopefully conclude in about a week. The Village has temporarily closed the S/L Outlet Trail between Federal St. and the trail footbridge, made necessary by the construction work. The old leaking gates, evaporation and low rainfall and contract-required draws for the sewer system created a low water level in Silver Lake creating recreational problems with S/L and area residents who are boat Tnd dock owners particularly as the season was drawing to a close.

J.L. DAVIS, COUNTY CHAIRMAN, STEPS DOWN — When the County Board meets on Tuesday, Sept. 8th, it most likely will be presided over by Town of Warsaw Supervisor, Becky Ryan, who is also the Deputy Chair of the County Board. Jerry L. Davis stepped down from its leadership on Friday, Sept. 4th after describing this past year as "extremely trying." He will continue to represent the Town of Covington, the position he has held for 20 years.
