Without Walkway Markings of Some Sort, Residents Know Only How to
Park in the Center of Walkway

Within 36 hours of the removal of walkway signs and colorful flags, three residents had parked their vehicle in the center of the walkway as opposed to the left or right of center. In other words, even though residents may agree in principle to a "road sharing" plan, they don't seem able or willing to judge how to leave ample space for the walkway. Back when the then-107-year-old rule of no wheeled vehicles on Ames Ave. at any time was first amended to allow for automobile parking, it did so with the caveat that parking would be allowed as long as the free flow of pedestrian traffic would not be blocked or otherwise impeded (caused to bottle neck).

Unfortunately, there were never any signs posted indicating the new ruling, so people heard only what they wanted to hear--"you can park now"--but whoever heard of parking in the middle of a street and getting away with it? While that is true, whoever heard of an unpaved, unmarked, un-curbed, un-bordered road left to the whims of the local residents? In order to begin the process of correcting a poor situation, one or more members of the LRPC will travel to the Wyoming County Records Division and obtain copies of maps and surveys which show exactly where Ames is located. In the meantime, local residents of Ames are welcome to have their own surveys copied or scanned if they believe that doing so will be to their advantage.

Every effort is being made to make the "road sharing" plan work in spite of the growing number of persons calling for the return to a complete ban of wheeled vehicles on Ames. The illegal encroachments of private owners into the right-of-way of Ames jeopardizes the ability to maintain adequate widths for a workable "road sharing" plan. And as long as residents continue to demonstrate their inability or unwillingness to share road space adequately, it becomes an issue of double jeopardy. Once we have the actual available widths available to us, we will soon be able to determine if there is ample widths for "road sharing."

Outside the category of parking, the LRPC believes the pedestrian pathway should be free from all moving, motorized-wheeled vehicles which could hurt or injure people; this would include golf carts, motor bikes, motorcycles, powered skateboards but would not jeopardize the use of single-person assistance vehicles for those whose mobility is impaired. LRPC recommends golf carts use Janes Ave. which has easy access to Epworth Hall and Asbury Camp & Retreat Center. LRPC does not recommend using unlicensed and uninsured vehicles on municipal roads such as Route 39, Perry Ave., Chapman Ave., Camp Road, Lakeside Ave., Walker Road, and Euclid Ave.
