News Briefs

OUT OF POWER -- The suburbs of New York CIty are without lights and power this evening following the tropical-storm-turned-hurricane which passed over the major business and residential areas of the Northeast such as Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City. As far west as Albany NY felt the affects of the fast moving storm.

COVID-19 CONTRASTS -- The statistics keep increasing in size with regards to new cases and hospitalizations, while the White House insists it's mostly gone and we are on the road to recovery. Medical professionals are expressing extreme frustration with the attitude that is obviously ignoring the peril in which they and their patients find themselves.

"SCHOOLS MUST BE OPENED" -- The President no longer has a problem demanding that schools be opened without conditions, even if there is a shortage of teachers. He insists children are mostly immune to the Covid-19. Doctors strongly dispute this and statistics indicate that it simply is not true, as children's cases continue to increase and deaths occur.

SPIRITUAL LIFE -- The SLI Spiritual LIfe Committee will meet August 15th at 1:00 to discuss the remaining weeks in August including Labor Day weekend with regard to the mini-worship services at the SLI Dock which are being very warmly received under the leadership of the Rev. Larry Beman and mostly lake talent at this point. They will also discuss next year's plan.

BIG BLUE DOCK -- SLI's Dock, opposite the Heritage Walkway and Flag Garden, is in the process of receiving new paint. The railings might be done by now and soon the wood planks will be taken on. Anyone interested in helping should contact Larry Beman, first cottage on Wesley Ave., diagonally opposite Hoag Memorial.

STREET NAME HISTORY -- "Where Do These Street Names Come From," the booklet accomplished through the research of the Rev. Rodney Jones, and the hard work of type-setting and layout, Editor Suzanne Bristow, continues to be available at the SLI office, 46 Wesley Ave. for $8.00. If you purchase it from the Daily Newsletter, 6988 Haven Ave., it will be discounted for purchase at $6.00.
