NTSB says Steve Barnes, 61, lost control in his fatal Pembroke plane crash for "undetermined reasons" two years ago. Both he and his niece, Elizabeth Barnes, were killed in the crash. The NTSB issued its final report Friday.
A pickup truck hauling a trailer and traveling west on the Thruway left the road and crashed into the Slusser Road bridge abutment, near Pembroke, late Sunday afternoon. The crash caused the trailer to detach and the Dodge Ram to end up vertically against the abutment. Both occupants of the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The victims were identified as Thomas T. Cartmel, 64, of Crossville, Alabama and his passenger Deborah J. Burrelli, 67, of Rochester.
Dean Gardner Jr., 45, of Pavilion faces charges following the choking of a woman in his truck parked on Warsaw Road to the point of not being able to breathe. Following that, Gardner went to the back of the truck to retrieve a gas can and attempted to set his driver's seat on fire. The woman texted for help so as not to be heard summoning help. Genesee County Emergency Dispatchers received the text and soon police arrived. Gardner was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree arson, second-degree menacing with a weapon, criminal obstruction of breathing, misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon and felony possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Town Court and -- get this -- released on his own recognizance. No word on the traumatized woman.
