Investigation Continues in Wethersfield:

Second abandoned house set on fire in Wyoming County
By Scott Desmit, sdesmit@batavianews.com

Another abandoned house owned by a large farm operation was set on fire Saturday night, Wyoming County fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 11:08 p.m. at 4085 Hermitage Rd. and by the time fire crews arrived the house was “totally involved in fire,” said Bill Streicher, Office of Emergency Management Services fire/ems coordinator.

Gainesville, Bliss, Silver Springs, Strykersville, Pike, Varysburg, Warsaw and Attica departments were called to the scene. Crews spent nearly three hours extinguishing what was left of the house.

The house is owned by Marquart Brothers.

Last week, fire was reported at 11:07 p.m., one minute from exactly the same time Saturday’s fire was called in.

That house, at 3856 Hermitage Rd., also is owned by Marquart Brothers and was engulfed in flames when the first fire crews arrived.

“Both fires were intentionally set,” Streicher said. “We can’t say how yet. Both are under very active investigation.”

Streicher said no other recent fires were believed to have been set on purpose.

A fire from last year, in the same area and at another abandoned house, remains under investigation, he said.
