DWI Charge:

Dump truck driver charged after late-night crash in Orleans County

CARLTON — A man driving a dump truck is “lucky to be alive” after he crashed and rolled the truck on a dirt road along a streep ravine Friday night. Austin F. Buzard, 23, of Carlton was charged with DWI after the crash, which happened just after 10 p.m.

Buzard was driving a truck for a paving company and was traveling on Clark Mills Road when he lost control of the truck, sending it rolling off the road and into trees. The dirt road winds its way high above Oak Orchard River, with a steep ravine on one side.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” said Rachel Benson, who lives near the crash scene. “He told us he swerved to miss deer but that was a lie.” Buzard had a blood alcohol of 0.19 percent and also was charged with aggravated DWI.

Benson said the truck also went off the road moments before the crash, hitting and knocking down a road sign. State police investigated the crash and charged Buzard, who is to appear at a later date in Town Court. Callahan Towing was called to upright and remove the truck from the scene.
