Livingston County Sheriff’s Office identifies victims in fatal Leicester crash
A person from Bangladesh died Wednesday evening after a vehicle in which he was riding was struck by a tractor-trailer.
The accident occurred 6:05 p.m. at Mount Morris and Perry Roads, Livingston County sheriff’s deputies said.
Abu Syed Rezaul Karim, 65, of Buffalo was northbound on Mount Morris Road with four passengers in his compact sport utility vehicle, deputies said. He tried to turn left onto Perry Road but pulled into the tractor-trailer’s path.
The tractor-trailer was unable to avoid the collision. Karim’s vehicle then collided with a second-vehicle waiting to make a turn on Perry Road.
Two backseat occupants were ejected from Karim’s vehicle in the collision.
Syed Kefayet Ullah, 58, of Bangladesh was pronounced dead at the scene. Chowdhury Mahbuba Mujahid, 47, was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital and was listed in guarded condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Karim and two other occupants were also transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, deputies said. The tractor-trailer driver and the occupants of the third vehicle escaped injury.
Karim was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way. The accident remains under investigation but deputies said preliminary findings show it’s non-criminal in nature.
The crash closed Route 36 between U.S. Route 20A and River Road for several hours.
The Leicester and Cuylerville fire departments, Mount Morris and State Park police, Mount Morris ambulance, Livingston County EMS, Mercy Flight and the Livingston County Emergency Management Office also responded to the scene.
