DEC officer gives trapped hawk a hand
CARLTON — A juvenile red-tailed hawk found itself in a precarious position earlier this month at Lakeside Beach State Park after landing on a picnic table.
The hawk may have slipped from its perch on the tipped-up table and got its leg caught between two of the table’s wood slats.
It was not known how long the bird was stuck. It did not appear malnourished and was calm when approached by the state environ-mental conservation officer who would ultimately free the bird. A passerby who saw the bird alerted authorities to its predicament and state Department of Environmental Conservation Officer Vernon Fonda was on scene in 10 to 15 minutes.
“I don’t know why it didn’t choose to perch in a tree, there were plenty of those around,” Fonda said in a telephone interview with The Daily News.
