Arson fire damages Albion Walmart; Fire forces on-going investigation
An arson fire caused “substantial” damage to the Albion Walmart Thursday night, forcing the store to be evacuated. Orleans County Sheriff Christopher Bourke said the fire started in a bathroom where it appears paper towels were set on fire.
The fire was reported at 8:15 p.m. Albion firefighters arrived and found thick black smoke coming from the bathroom. Medina Fast Team and a crew from Barre also were called to the scene. Bourke said firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof as it appeared the fire extended into the ceiling.
“We don’t have a damage estimate but there is substantial damage,” he said. The fire was mostly contained to the bathroom and was quickly extinguished. All employees and customers were evacuated safely.
Firefighters used exhaust fans to ventilate the building. Walmart was open Friday. Bourke said investigators were busy Friday following leads. He could not comment further on the investigation.
