Cleaning Solution Blamed:
One dead in Orleans, Yates tragedy
YATES — One person is dead and another was hospitalized after they were found unresponsive Tuesday morning in a semi-tanker. Orleans County emergency dispatchers were alerted 10:56 a.m. for the report of the two men inside a tanker at Millennium Roads LLC on 12118 East Yates Center Rd. Upon arrival, Orleans County sheriff’s deputies and Emergency Management personnel were able to remove the two men. One was unresponsive and the other appeared to have shallow breathing.

Chase Johnson, 35, was treated at the scene, sheriff’s investigators said. He was then flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital about 11:45 a.m.

Keegan Bayne, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. Their places of residence were not immediately available.

It was learned the two men had been cleaning inside the tanker that was used to haul the product “Lignin”. Lignin is described as a complex polymer used in some forms of industrial production.

Assisting at the scene was the, Lyndonville Fire Department, Medina Fire Department, Orleans County EMO, Genesee County EMO, Hazmat, Niagara County Technical Rescue Team, State Fire, Mercy Flight, NYSP, NYS DEC and the, Orleans County Coroner’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
