York-Leicester Field Day canceled
The York-Leicester Field Day has been canceled for a second consecutive summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The York-Leicester Field Day Association Inc., which puts on the popular summer festival, announced late Sunday night that their annual field day and fireworks celebration has been postponed to July 2022. The event had been scheduled for July 1.
“This decision was based on several factors including the uncertainty regarding the number of people that could still become infected by the COVID virus, the federal and state mandates that are currently in effect regarding large gatherings, and primarily, the safety of all in attendance,” the Association said in a statement. The Association thanked its volunteers for faithfully donating its time and talents to insure that the event could take place and “it is hoped that all will be willing to assist next year when conditions should be improved.”
The event was also canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, which would have been the 67th Field Day. Organizers also thanked the businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made monetary donations that have enabled the event to continue for more than 60 years.
“Be assured that any money that has been, or will be donated, will be applied to whatever expenses are incurred to have this Field Day and Fireworks continue as usual,” the Association said.
The York-Leicester Field Day, which takes place on the grounds of York Central School, attracts large crowds from throughout the region. The event features family-oriented games such as three-legged races, egg tosses and an unusual sneaker scramble; musical entertainment, free treats, face painting, jump houses and other activities. The event closes with a grand fireworks display.
The event has seldom been canceled – less than a handful of times in its history. The announcement is only the third time in recent memory that the event has been canceled. Outside of the pandemic, the last time the event did not take place was in 2015 when excessive wetness on the grounds at York Central School led to the event’s cancellation after two postponement. The month of July 2015 was noted for above-normal rainfall. The popular family-oriented festival is often scheduled with an announced rain date, which was used in 2017 in the event was postponed for a day.
“Our goal is to provide the public with an entertaining and patriotic celebration of our country’s independence and to do so with safety in minds,” the Association’s statement said. “We look forward to having this event next year when there should be fewer restrictions and a safe environment.” The last Field Day in 2019 was part of the Town of York’s year-long bicentennial celebration.
