Racial Slurs and a Knife:
Attica man charged with felony hate crimes in dispute with neighbors

Dillen J. Powell
An Attica village man with a history of using racial slurs was charged with felony hate crimes for threatening his black neighbors with a knife during the weekend, village police said.

Dillen J. Powell, 21, was charged Sunday with first-degree burglary, first-degree menacing as a hate crime, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime, all felonies. The burglary charge is a class B violent felony punishable by up to 25 years in state prison.

Attica Sgt. Karl Zufall said the charges came after an investigation into an ongoing dispute Powell had with his neighbors at 10 East Ave., an apartment house. Powell and the neighbors were in a dispute about 6:45 p.m. Saturday. Zufall said Powell “had issues in the past using the ‘n’ word” and was calling his neighbors racial slurs during the argument.

Zufall said Powell “told his neighbors that his family was coming back to jump them.” Powell left and a short time later, Powell’s mother and her husband arrived and began arguing with the couple, Zufall said.

“Powell comes into the apartment with a knife and is thrusting it in a stabbing motion,” Zufall said. The woman in the apartment grabbed a broom and chased all three out of the apartment, Zufall said. Powell was charged with first-degree burglary because he entered the apartment without permission and had a weapon at the time. Zufall said Powell has a previous menacing conviction, making it a felony for him to possess a weapon in the commission of a crime.

No one else has been charged. Zufall said other charges are pending against Powell and that the investigation is continuing. Powell was arraigned and committed to Wyoming County Jail without bail.
