Genesee deputies warn of driveway sealing scams 'too good to be true'
Area residents are being warned of asphalt and paving scams as warm weather approaches. People should be cautious if they’re solicited by a person who appears to be a contractor offering to pave and seal their driveway, Genesee County sheriff’s deputies said in a news release.
The scam generally begins when an apparent contractor makes an unsolicited offer while saying they have extra sealer from another job in the neighborhood, deputies said. They’ll make a “too good to be true” offer to pave the homeowner’s driveway at a discounted rate. The actual bill is then higher than what the homeowner originally agreed to, while the materials and work prove overpriced and unreliable.
The Sheriff’s Office has already received one such complaint. The homeowner in that instance was suspicious and denied the offer. The sheriff’s office is asking that people use good judgment and alert them if they’re aware of such activity in their neighborhood.
