Trouble Keeps Finding Local Man:
A day after guilty plea, man arrested on drug charges, methamphetamine found

MICHAEL SWEET
A Varysburg man who was sentenced to a conditional discharge March 31 in Wyoming County Court was arrested a day later and charged with having methamphetamine in a house with an infant child, Wyoming County sheriff’s deputies said.

Michael A. Sweet, 35, was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal use of drug paraphernalia. The arrest came after a Child Protective Services visit to the house on March 31, the same day Sweet appeared in County Court on several charges.

CPS workers called deputies after finding drugs in the house. Deputies seized meth and drug paraphernalia. The next day, Thursday, Sweet returned to the residence and was arrested. He also had an active warrant for petit larceny from Monroe County. Sweet was arraigned and released to a pre-trial supervision program.

Sweet was in County Court to answer to charges of two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a stolen property, criminal impersonation and aggravated unlicensed operation. Sweet had been arrested after he allegedly took a car without permission from a residence in Batavia and later ran out of gas in Java. He was accused of possessing a stolen car and giving police a fake name.

Sweet’s father told The Daily News that he gave the truck to his son a day earlier and contacted police when his son failed to return the truck. In court Thursday, Sweet waived indictment and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor attempted criminal possession of stolen property. Judge Michael Mohun sentenced him to a one-year conditional discharge, a sentence that could be negated by the new charges.

Sweet also was charged in mid-March with possessing meth and drug paraphernalia. That case remains pending in Town Court.
