It's getting to be that time of year again . . . I've already heard more than one M80 go off not far from my home at Silver Lake. I've been home from the war for 40 years (1970-2020) and one would think I would be completely over some of the sights and sounds of that place, but alas, I am not. The only way I enjoy fireworks these days is on television where even my self-conscious mind realizes that I'm safe. The M80s are the worst but the screeching rockets come in at a very close second. The first means it missed, so take cover before the next one. The screeching, on the other hand, means you have a few seconds to duck or take cover before it hits.... I remember how much I enjoyed fireworks as a boy and a young man, but I just can't summon up those distant feelings and thoughts any more.... I learned to love and depend on my M16 and in later months, the 45 caliber. But now I prefer to be as far away from them all as possible; and whatever you do, please do not point one at me--not even a toy one "in fun"! Thanks for listening ... yup ... it's that time of year again ....
