There were times, many generations ago, when Hallow's Eve (Halloween) served as the functional evening holiday when evil spirits were chased away by humans dressed in ugly and fearful costumes--all in preparation for the Christian Holy Day of All Souls Day (All Saints Day) on November 1st. Today, Halloween is simply a fun day of dress up and parties utilizing such foods as candy, candy- corn, apples, donuts and cider. Some still practice "trick or treat" exercises at the homes of family, friends, neighbors, offices, and businesses which replaces a practice of travelling cold turkey door to door which became too filled with tricks, dangerous and troublesome.
October 30th:
At one time the day before Hallow's Eve was known as
Beggars' Night. Those arriving 24 hours early for Trick
or Treat were said to be "beggars" usually also in
costume. Two nights was eventually viewed
as one too many for begging free candy.
