A Discussion Opportunity Not Afraid of Asking Critical Questions about our Faith and Scripture

A sign up sheet on yesterday's Welcome Table at the Mid-Winter Survivors' Party was the beginning of a winter group forming for the purpose of discussing one's faith with others of equal or different levels of faith or experience. The Discussion group initially plans to get together for a few trial runs next month (February) and into March. Details will be available here on this Blog.

The purpose is to try something relatively new from what some know as old fashioned Bible Study. In Bible Study, one usually seeks to discover the themes of orthodoxy (proper and fully accepted religious thinking). The hope with the discussion mode is to be open to talking openly about how individuals really feel and what they really believe, whether or not any church body would agree with them or not. The Bible will serve as a reference point to demonstrate how radical some of its ideas really were to the religious views of their day.

Bible stories and accounts of events sounding like history will cause us to examine not only the intended meaning behind them, but will also raise questions such as "what are the most troubling of thoughts behind the accepted meaning?" and "What does this tell us about the God of the Old and New Testaments?" This dynamic is used quite regularly in many seminaries but usually doesn't find its way down to the average person in our communities.

If you would like to check this out with us, keep watching this Blog or give us your email (if we don't already have it) and we will supply information there also. Discussion will be available with hot coffee or tea since we suspect winter won't be leaving us any time soon.
