Reversal of Fortunes: News Media, Hollywood Media Top Politics

Since our last story about public figures and inappropriate behavior, there is a growing list of violators (31 so far) who have exercised improper behavior against co-workers and employees. This continues to remind us of the powerful Women's Suffrage movement and more specifically, the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) whose priority was to eliminate "demon rum" and tobacco which they believed were interfering with the stability of the American home and a proper atmosphere in which to raise children. They also believed that faith, forgiveness, and church was a righteous alternative to the sins of society.

Back then the central problem was alcohol and the peripheral problem was denial. Today the presenting problem is sexually-related misbehavior, but the peripheral problem remains the same for politicians--denial of wrong doing and lack of truth telling. Why do we single out politicians over, let's say, the news media, or even seemingly more obviously, the Hollywood [movie] media?

We single out the political because their denial of the problem is so blatant and disturbing. And so far, the political types are keeping their jobs whereas the news and movie media honchos are losing theirs left and right. Though it is unfair to lump all political leaders together equally, it becomes more and more obvious that the top political leader of our country, having once admitted wrong doing and asking forgiveness, is now backtracking, casting personal doubt on the very video tape that he knew nailed him in the first place and for which he had to apologize. Additionally, this leader is far too inclined to call even his supporters "total liars" when he is the one holding the record for fake information on both a daily and monthly basis of record keeping.

This same top political leader has put himself in cahoots with a United States Senator wannabe accused of child molestation and teen dating when he was 33. Together, what they say they stand for, is overshadowed by blatant hypocrisy, delusional untruths, and gut-wrenching denials. While claiming to stand for morality, they both have backgrounds of immorality, typical for the hypocritical. One of them speaks about not even knowing all the women coming forward to accuse, while the other simply gives fake information by calling all his women-accusers total liars--our leader casting doubt where there normally wouldn't be any.

All of this sad and angering conduct is couched in denial, the  type that says, "If I keep saying what I want to believe is true, it will be as good as true." Aren't we better than this? And if so, what must be done to call our political leaders to accountability? In the meantime, a whole generation of children will learn very bad lessons and conduct which will hurt their ability to advance their careers and relationships in the future. Let us pledge to protect the values of our present so as to insure our grandchildren of the important values for their future.
WHAT DOES STOODY HALL HAVE IN COMMON
WITH THE PROPERTY OF PIONEER CABIN
A growing number of men back before the turn of the century (early 1880s through 1890s) were being tempted and giving in to drunkenness, tobacco and debauchery, all of which were creating instability in home life both in relationships and in finances. The WCTU worked hand-in-hand with the Silver Lake Assembly (and then SLI) and the Methodist Episcopal Church in presenting conferences and training in strong efforts to counter the problems being created. Education was not the total extent of it.
The local WCTU confronted the evils at their core locally, namely right within the well known Walker Road entertainment strip. This put a tremendous crimp in the drunken frenzy and created enough anger that those who had chosen to imbibe in the pleasures of the strip, drastically reacted by burning down the WCTU building which was then located on the southeastern section of the grounds of the Pioneer Cabin.

The arson precipitated the WCTU approaching the gated community of the Silver Lake Assembly to build a new headquarters building on the grounds of the Assembly, having the benefit of protection provided by the fenced, barbed, and gated border of the grounds. The new WCTU building was built on the corner of Park Ave. and Embury and is today the John N. Stoody Memorial Hall.
