'Summer, Spring, Winter or Fall ...'

It's Fall. It's Cloudy. There's a breeze, not cold, just enough to get some leaves to give up their hold on branches they have clung to since Spring. The water is ripply with white  foam "wakes" which aren't wakes in the genuine sense of the word, almost as though the Lake was skimming itself of some unwanted quantity which had been pushed to the top with now nowhere else to go. At least the Lake seems busy. Elsewhere there is nothing stirring but an occasional car unhindered by other traffic. Oh, and there's another car, temporarily parked at the Post Office and a man inching outward through the door with mail in his hands.

On the north side of my little cottage are four cottages that have been abandoned for the winter to come. In addition, one more cottage stands pretty much abandoned permanently as its damaged entrance-way and porch stand as a reminder of that late summer night's beer party that turned into vandalism. To my south, active and busy cottages, some with children . . . at least three of them. Their voices cut unexpectedly through the unparalleled stillness. Perhaps it's the gray waning skies that make it seem hauntingly empty when there are really significant pockets of activity. Perhaps it seems empty because I am forever comparing the grounds of October with that of July. The contrast is so stark that it continues to serve as a reminder of the uniqueness of this community . . . be it "summer, spring, winter or fall."

Thanks, James Taylor, I know I've got a friend . . . actually, many.
