Board Secures SLI Future thru Realtor Info Sheet, Stricter Landlord, Renter Methods and No Welcome Committee

Realtors have been requesting something that would help them to sell properties within the Silver Lake Institute (SLI), especially since even they felt inadequate to the task without some type of official help. During the Season, there was also folks talking about the need for SLI to be much more influential in helping to interest people that are specifically inclined to like the facilities, activities, and programs available at SLI and who also happen to be seeking a home such as we have available on the grounds. The Trustee Board on Saturday, Oct. 14th, approved a one-page, one side Information Sheet, designed to be much more warmly and interestingly written than trying to use our Handbook as a welcoming document.

The sheet, entitled "Interesting Facts about the Silver Lake Institute," was based on a longer document prepared by the SLI Chaplain and published on the SLI Blog this Season as an unofficial but worthy suggestion. This piece of advertising will be distributed through all of the local realtors offices and addresses what the Silver Lake Institute (SLI) is all about in as brief a form as possible and yet covering its purpose, mission, and expectations in such a way as to interest the reader.

The second last paragraph of this new advertising document was altered from "Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the greenway, the big blue dock, the leased dock spaces," [to include] nor any other of the private, Institute-owned streets, parks, or buildings. It is permitted on individual's privately owned properties. [Exact wording to be provided soon.]

The total recommendation for educating prospective members of the Institute looking to purchase property on our grounds included what many considered the top feature and was given the tentative title of "Orientation/Welcome Meeting." It was visioned as the ultimate one-on-one experience of a great two-way conversation of volunteers talking about the Institute while the prospective property purchasers would be provided every opportunity to raise questions or ask for further descriptions or details. It was dropped because it was felt that getting people together during the early stages of the sales process would create too much of a delay in getting property approved by the Board. There is still hope that it could be offered on a volunteer basis.

While this section was not approved as official policy, neither was it hindered from occurring, and does in fact happen whenever the opportunity is presented (quite often on the dock at sunset when strangers approach and leave as friends). Many thanks to Sarah Clark and other sunset gazers who supply this "ministry of education." We hope this one-on-one opportunity can one day be offered on the "Interesting Facts About Silver Lake Institute" sheet for people who want to take advantage of it. Other additions to the sheet might include the SLI phone number and email address, along with the SLI Blog address.

We also now have a new member / new cottage owner Greeter. Joan Maddison was previously designated as both the SLI's official Welcomer-Greeter and the Worship Committee's official Welcomer-Greeter. She will work with Kathy Gilner in determining who is ready to be welcomed with a homemade loaf of bread. Joan will carry with her the "Interesting Facts about the SLI" document just in case they had not seen it or lost it. The Worship Committee will also provide additional information. When program information becomes publicly available next year, Joan will also carry the "Events Calendar" with her.

Hopefully, the new advertising piece will also be effective in encouraging new members to make friends at the Saturday morning Breakfast Cafes where the sunset gazers can also be found, along with a "whole bunch" of other new and exciting folks looking for food and friendship.

This document can be found in the Real Estate tab in the Menu above.
