Historical Markers Finally Installed in the Park: Bishop Burt, Camp Wesley, Auditorium/Amphitheater

Bishop Burt
Early Wednesday morning, Sign Language made its way onto the Silver Lake Institute grounds and brought with them the historical markers which have been in progress for over two years, mostly awaiting the donor funds to complete the order and the installation which have now been completed. Chronologically, the first historical marker is in the center and describes the 1872 beginnings of what was then named "Camp Wesley." The first structure at the brand new camp was the Pavilion which was a speakers' platform with a raised floor and protective covering over it, done in the appropriate gingerbread trim of the day (weatherproof photo included). The second historical marker is at the right and also contains both a weatherproof photo and description of the 2,500-seat open-air Amphitheater which was completed in time for the 1888 Season of what was then referred to as the Silver Lake Chautauqua Assembly (officially just Silver Lake Assembly because of our official relationship with the Genesee/WNY Annual Conference of the then-Methodist-Episcopal Church). The third historical marker is at the left, without a photo, and seeks to recognize and honor Bishop William Burt, a very generous man who supported the Institute from its earliest days right through the turn of the century. Auditorium Park was renamed Bishop Burt Park in his honor after the 1918 fire that destroyed the Amphitheater. A very large photo of Bishop Burt hangs in the second floor museum of the Hoag Memorial Hall & Art Gallery.
