Chaplain Reports Broad Range of
Speakers Enhanced the 2016 Season

Even before our separation from the Upper NY United Methodist Conference last February, our Worship Committee has been making a conscious effort to broaden the scope of our Sunday Morning Worship experiences. This is principally because our community is so diverse and we are seeking to offer meaningful spiritual experiences to as many as possible in our broad community.

This past July and August (2016 Season), we were fortunate enough to have our kickoff speaker at the Dock be a man of biblical dynamic, but also one who has studied and written in the field of WNY

History--Rev. Greg Van Dusen. Our second speaker, Rev. David Lubba, a noted dynamic preacher, brought the additional perspective of having served as a Missionary in the Philippines for 20 years.

Our third speaker was a second career Roman Catholic Priest whose first career was in television broadcasting--Rev. Barry Lillis. Our fourth speaker began as an active Roman Catholic lay person and wound up becoming pastor of the Roman Catholic Church that pulled itself out of its "regular" relationship with Rome and the Pope and became part of the American Catholic Church. This dynamic leader is the Rev. Mary Ramerman.

Our fifth Sunday, we experienced a musical worship experience as Reg and Gretchen Dunneman were our guests in place of the liturgy and sermon of the day. The Dunnemans are musicians on staff at the Odosagih Bible Conference Assoc. Inc. in Machias, NY.

Our Chaplain, Greg Franklin, led us through two of the five remaining services--our annual Service of Holy Communion the first Sunday of August (7th) and also our annual Memorial Service of August 21st for those around the Lake having lost loved ones to memorialize them with the naming of their loved one, the tolling of a bell, lighting of a candle, and receiving of a rose. This was a long time tradition for the Institute and is now growing to be loved by people throughout the Lake community.

Our speaker for August 14th, was the beloved Rev. Don Vogel, who at 93 continues to preach. Mr. Vogel spent the first 20 years of his retirement pastoring the congregation at Perry Center Church and also as the American Legion Chaplain in Perry. He brought perspective that only a person of his age and experience could bring.

Our speaker for August 28th was the Rev. Dr. William Russell. Dr. Russell is an ordained minister but served his principal career as a school psychologist in Hamburg, NY. His messages are always thought provoking and inspirational, as he brings the more liberal views of the Christian community to the Institute.

The closing service at the Dock (Sept. 4) was a combining of a Hymn Sing with a brief Institute history by Worship Committee member Susan Bristow and Chair of the Committee Don Weaver. An absolutely delightful experience and wonderful way in which to close out the Season.
