New SLI Independent Legal Status
Brings about New Trustee Board
To be Elected this July 9, 2016

February 2, 2016, the Silver Lake Institute went from being an entity of the United Methodist Church, to an independent non-profit organization under the laws of the State of New York. It happened in the State Supreme Court located in Warsaw, N.Y., after three years of long negotiations with the Trustees of the Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. At times, their approach presented tremendous challenges to the SLI Legal Committee, but in time, they were all overcome.

Under the jurisdiction of the Church, SLI's Board of Trustees was made up of 50% representatives from the Annual Conference, and 50% representation from the property owners. This July, the SLI will elect its first full Trustee Board made up of 100% property owners with no further connection with the Church other than an informal, warm and cooperative friendship with Asbury Camp & Retreat Center. The land that Camp Asbury sits on is no longer within the bounds of the Silver Lake Institute but remains in its rich history.

At last year's August Election of Officers, Rev. Greg Franklin resigned his position as Treasurer of SLI, so the office of Treasurer would not be standing empty in mid-year when the legal separation took place. Greg has served for 10 years as an SLI Trustee, elected by the Annual Conference. His Trustee seat was eliminated with the legal separation in February as was the seat of Jim Blythe.

Because there are ample people running for the new SLI Trustee Board this July, Greg has decided to take time off as a Trustee thereby giving him more time to put into other projects such as the Daily Independent News Blog of SLI (6 years old this month), and his ongoing responsibilities as SLI Chaplain and member of the Worship Committee, Legal Committee, Epworth Hall Committee, and Informal Communica-tions Group.

Remember to join your friends and neighbors for the Annual Property/Cottage Owners Meeting held the second Saturday of July usually at 2 p.m. in Epworth Hall. Come to be a part of our 2016 Transition Year and the election of our all-new Trustee Board.
