While most business topics of Saturday's first meeting of the full Board of Trustees for 2016 were handled with due dispatch, there was one safety concern which needed to be tabled until the May 7th Board Meeting. That concern is child safety as it pertains to traffic on Lakeview Avenue ignoring speed limits and stop signs.
Last season, while temporary road barricades set up on Lakeview Ave. served to provide an adequate protection for children during a Lakeview resident's family gathering, there were other Institute residents not at all happy with the closure of Lakeview Avenue in front of that resident's home. The resident spoke to the dangerous conditions of vehicles ignoring both the speed limit and the stop signs on Lakeview Avenue.
President Bill Schaefer asked those present at the meeting to help spread the word that there would be a discussion of this problem at next month's May 7th meeting. All Institute residents interested in this currently unsolved problem should plan to come with ideas dealing with both sides of the issue.

It seems to me that we have a traffic problem first and foremost. If drivers were following the speed limits and stopping at stop signs, the danger would be greatly reduced. I would recommend (1) creating a portable, official "NYS Crosswalk" designation that could be set up for such special events; and (2) because of bad drivers, set up a "Crossing Guard" Task Force who would maintain a list of willing people to serve as Crossing Guards protecting foot traffic in the crosswalk, armed with a clearly visible camera which could be used to snap the picture of the license plate violating crosswalk rules. Violators could be either handled through fines attached to the tax bill, or it could be handed over to the Sheriff's Department. The benefitting resident might be willing to "tip" or otherwise compensate the Crosswalk Guard or Guards for the duration of their event.
